Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi announced that Pakistan’s long-standing passport backlog has been fully cleared, as reported by News channels. The announcement was made during the inauguration of a state-of-the-art Immigration and Passport Office in Islamabad on Thursday.
During the ceremony, Naqvi emphasized improved service delivery, stating that passport offices would now operate more efficiently, ensuring citizens receive prompt and respectful service. He revealed plans to transform the institution into a formal authority and announced upcoming new offices in Lahore and Karachi.
Key Reforms and Improvements
The minister outlined several measures aimed at modernizing passport services, including:
- Passport Counters at NADRA Offices: New counters will be set up in NADRA offices across various cities within 5–7 days, operating 24/7 to provide doorstep services.
- 24-Hour Operations: The Islamabad Passport Office will transition to 24-hour service, with model passport centers to be established in Lahore, Karachi, and other provincial capitals.
- International Reforms: NADRA mega centers in 14 cities will soon offer round-the-clock passport services, enhancing accessibility and convenience.
Tackling Corruption and Streamlining Services
Naqvi highlighted the government’s commitment to eradicating corruption and tackling the ‘agent mafia’ operating outside passport offices. He noted that the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) is actively cracking down on these illegal operations.
Enhanced Facilities
The newly inaugurated Islamabad office features a modernized reception area, an online services section, a production center, and a data center. Naqvi toured the facility and commended staff for their performance, presenting shields and cash prizes to those who excelled in passport production.
Improved Service Timelines
Previously, citizens faced delays of up to six months in receiving passports, often causing significant inconvenience for those needing urgent travel. Naqvi assured the public that such delays are now a thing of the past. “Citizens will now receive their passports on time,” he affirmed.
Positive Public Reception
Naqvi shared his satisfaction after recent visits to NADRA and passport centers in Lahore and Karachi, where citizens expressed appreciation for the improvements. He noted that long queues and delays have been eliminated, marking a significant shift in public service delivery.
Attendance of Officials
The event was attended by key figures, including NADRA Chairman Lt. General Muhammad Munir Afsar, Chief Commissioner Islamabad Muhammad Ali Randhawa, and IG Islamabad Police Ali Nasir Rizvi. DG Passports Mustafa Jamal Qazi praised Naqvi’s efforts, calling the reforms a step toward excellence in public service.
This initiative marks a major advancement in modernizing public services in Pakistan, ensuring timely and efficient passport and immigration facilities for citizens nationwide.
