The Karachi Commissioner has announced the imposition of Section 144 for 48 hours starting December 31, 2024, following safety concerns related to New Year’s Eve celebrations.
In Karachi, festivities often involve aerial gunfire and fireworks, which have previously led to injuries. The commissioner has issued this ban to prevent such incidents, citing the risks associated with large gatherings and dangerous activities.
Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code grants local authorities the power to restrict gatherings of four or more people for a set period.
This new notification, dated December 24, 2024, was based on intelligence suggesting that several young people head to Seaview in cars and motorcycles for the celebrations, causing traffic disruptions and inconvenience to residents.
The South Deputy Inspector General of Police requested the ban to prevent the display of firearms, aerial firing, and fireworks, aiming to protect citizens’ lives.
The commissioner emphasized the potential for tragic incidents caused by such reckless behavior, and a comprehensive ban on carrying weapons, aerial firing, and fireworks has been put in place from December 31, 2024, to January 1, 2025.
