Peshawar Zalmi, one of the marquee franchises of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), has reignited cricket in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with its Talent Hunt Trials at the Arbab Niaz Stadium on Wednesday. The trials saw around 8,000 aspiring cricketers showcasing their skills in front of Peshawar Zalmi’s management, marking a major revival of cricket in the region after a long hiatus.
Talent Showcase and Future Matches
The trials, supervised by former cricketing stars like Mohammad Yousuf, Kamran Akmal, and Umar Gul, will be followed by several matches scheduled from January 2 to 5 at the Hayatabad Sports Complex.
Mohammad Akram, Zalmi’s Director of Cricket, also provided an update on the stadium’s ongoing development, revealing that 20-25% of the work remains. He expressed optimism that by 2025, Arbab Niaz Stadium will once again host international matches, reviving its historic role as a venue for major cricket events.
Akram’s remarks came as part of a broader initiative to develop the region’s cricket infrastructure. He highlighted that 100 new pitches are also under construction to further enhance the facilities. He expressed his belief that the passion for cricket in KPK deserves a platform to showcase talent, and with these developments, the stadium could soon host PSL and international fixtures.
KPK’s Strong Cricketing Contribution
Kamran Akmal echoed Akram’s optimism, underscoring the exceptional cricketing talent in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He pointed out that the region has produced a significant portion of the national team, with 60-70% of the squad coming from KPK.
Zalmi Push for PSL in Peshawar
Javed Afridi, Zalmi’s owner, has been actively lobbying the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to include Peshawar as a venue for the 10th edition of the PSL. Afridi recently shared news of support from the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, ensuring the city’s participation in future tournaments.
Zalmi, champions of the 2017 PSL, have been a consistent presence in the playoffs, and with these ongoing developments, Peshawar looks set to become a hub for both domestic and international cricket.
