The UAE experienced its coldest day of the winter season on Friday, much to the delight of residents, as frost and ice crystals were spotted on the country’s highest mountain.
Temperatures plunged to a freezing 2.2°C at 6:45 AM on Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah, according to the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM).
Such frosty conditions are not unprecedented in the desert nation. During the UAE winter, ice pellets or even snow can occasionally fall in some of the coldest areas, such as Raknah in Al Ain and Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah.
In previous years, sub-zero temperatures in these regions turned Raknah into a temporary “tourist spot,” with excited residents traveling to the mountains to play with ice and build snowmen.
The chilly Friday also brought rain to several parts of the country, including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Umm Al Quwain, and Ras Al Khaimah.
