Fakhar Zaman Eyes Champions Trophy Comeback

Fakhar Zaman, Pakistan’s explosive left-handed batter, has declared he is “100% certain” of making his comeback to the national side and is setting his sights firmly on the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

The tournament, scheduled to be held from February 19 to March 9, will take place in Pakistan and Dubai.

In a conversation on the Vipers Voices podcast, Fakhar revealed his recent struggles with a medical condition that sidelined him from international cricket. He said,

A 100%, I will play for Pakistan again. After the T20 World Cup, I got sick, and because of my medical condition, I wasn’t fit to be part of the team. But now I have recovered 100%, and you will see me in the next white-ball series Pakistan plays.

Speaking about his return, Fakhar said: “My plan has revolved around the Champions Trophy. I skipped the tours to Australia and South Africa to focus on my fitness and ensure I’m fully ready for this tournament. The 2017 Champions Trophy was a turning point in my career, and I’m excited to make an impact once again.”

Fakhar confirmed that he has the full backing of the selectors and coaching staff for his inclusion in the squad. “I’ve talked to the selectors and the head coach, and everyone wanted me to play in the Champions Trophy,” he added.

Fakhar also heaped praise on 22-year-old opener Saim Ayub, who has been a revelation for Pakistan in recent years. Ayub’s meteoric rise includes three centuries in just nine ODI innings. However, an ankle fracture sustained during the second Test against South Africa in Cape Town has cast doubts over his Champions Trophy participation.

“I hope Saim recovers quickly. He’s an incredible talent and, in my opinion, will be among the top three players in the world if he keeps performing like this,” Fakhar said.

Acknowledging the competition at the top of the order, Fakhar expressed his willingness to adapt to the team’s needs. “If the team wants me to bat at number four or five, I’ll happily do it. For me, the team always comes first, but I’ve always preferred opening,” he admitted.

Currently, Fakhar Zaman is gearing up for his maiden stint in the ILT20, where he will represent the Desert Vipers in another bid to prove his return to fitness.
