The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has initiated work to address the anticipated traffic congestion at the F-10 roundabout, also known as McDonald Chowk, following the completion of the ongoing flyover project on Jinnah Avenue in Sector F-8.
The Jinnah Avenue project aims to streamline traffic at one location, but concerns were raised about its potential to create bottlenecks at the nearby F-10 roundabout. In response, the CDA has started remodeling the roundabout to prevent traffic issues from escalating. Consultant firm Nespak has proposed a design featuring “fish belly” U-turns on Jinnah Avenue and Nazimuddin Road, along with removing the roundabout to connect both roads directly.
Addressing safety concerns about the high-speed traffic on Jinnah Avenue, CDA officials explained that the U-turns would be constructed at a 500-meter distance, which they believe is sufficient for motorists to adjust their lanes safely.
The contractor for the Jinnah Avenue project has been authorized to take on this additional work. According to a CDA deputy director, while there were initial demands for an underpass at the F-10 roundabout, U-turns were deemed a more practical solution. Under the terms of the contract, up to 15% of additional work is permissible, and the savings from modifying the underpass design on Jinnah Avenue will be used to fund the remodeling of the F-10 roundabout.
The Jinnah Avenue project, inaugurated recently by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, has two key components: an underpass for traffic heading from F-10 toward Blue Area, which was partially completed last month, and a flyover for traffic moving from F-8 to F-10, which is still under construction. CDA officials are confident that the project will be completed within the targeted 100 days.
Work on the destruction of the F-10 roundabout has already begun.
