South Africa’s preparations for the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 have been dealt a severe blow as pace spearhead Anrich Nortje has been ruled out due to a back injury. The 31-year-old underwent scans earlier this week, which confirmed the injury’s extent, ruling him out of the marquee tournament scheduled to begin on February 19th.
South Africa will kick off their campaign against Afghanistan in Karachi, Pakistan, but they’ll now have to do so without their dynamic paceman. The Proteas are expected to announce Anrich Nortje’s replacement shortly.
Injury Woes Continue for Anrich Nortje
This setback marks the second consecutive ICC event Nortje will miss due to injury. The right-arm quick also sat out the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India, where South Africa’s campaign ended in the semi-finals. A stress fracture in his back sidelined him then, and now, another back-related issue has ruled him out of one of cricket’s biggest stages.
A Crucial Cog
Known for his fiery pace, sharp bounce, and tactical variations, Anrich Nortje has been instrumental in South Africa’s white-ball success. With 36 wickets in just 22 ODIs and 53 scalps in 42 T20Is, the pacer has consistently delivered impactful performances. His absence leaves a significant void in the Proteas’ pace arsenal, which has long relied on his ability to unsettle batsmen in all conditions.
Interestingly, Nortje hasn’t played an ODI in over 15 months, last appearing in South Africa’s second ODI against Australia in Bloemfontein. Despite this, his proven track record made him a vital part of South Africa’s plans for the Champions Trophy.
Squad Retains Core from 2023 World Cup
South Africa has maintained consistency in their squad selection, retaining 10 of the 15 players who featured in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. The team, which made a strong run to the semi-finals last year, will now have to rally without their star pacer.
The Road Ahead
While the loss of Anrich Nortje is a setback, South Africa will hope that their depth and experienced core can carry them through. As the tournament nears, the Proteas face the challenge of filling the gap left by one of their most reliable pacemen. For South Africa, the Champions Trophy represents both a challenge and an opportunity to showcase their resilience as they seek to end their ICC trophy drought.
