Deadline Announced for Installing Water Meters

The Lahore High Court has directed the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) to provide a timeline for the installation of water meters, according to a report by 24NewsHD TV.

During a hearing on smog prevention held on Friday, the court instructed WASA to prioritize the installation of water meters, starting with commercial users.

Justice Shahid Karim noted that WASA has neither installed meters nor monitored service stations effectively. He emphasized that water wastage would not stop until meters were installed. The court ordered WASA to submit a detailed timeline for the installation of water meters.

In response to concerns about meter availability, the court questioned why local manufacturing of water meters could not be initiated if they were not being sourced from China.

The Member of the Environmental Commission suggested holding WASA SDOs and EXNs accountable for water wastage.

Additionally, the commission proposed exempting schools operating on plots of five marlas or less and charging fees below Rs. 2,000 from using buses. However, the court remarked that such exemptions should fall under the purview of the Education Department. Justice Karim stated that recent amendments to the Education Department were a positive step and encouraged further action.

The court also stressed the need for a grievance council to address complaints effectively.

The hearing of the smog remediation case has been adjourned until January 24.
