An overseas Pakistani has filed a Rs. 178.07 million compensation lawsuit against the Sindh government, BRT Red Line authorities, and the project’s contractor after losing one of his eyes in a road accident allegedly caused by unsafe construction work on Karachi’s University Road.
According to 24News, the case has been filed before the Senior Civil Judge (East) against the BRT Red Line project director and the contractor responsible for the ongoing construction.
The plaintiff, Syed Waqas, is seeking compensation for medical expenses, rehabilitation costs, permanent disability, loss of income, and other damages resulting from the accident.
His lawyer, Advocate Usman Farooq, told the court that Waqas had traveled from abroad to Pakistan in 2025 to perform Hajj.
While heading to Karachi airport via University Road in May 2025, his vehicle allegedly crashed into a construction barrier installed as part of the BRT Red Line project.
According to the lawsuit, the barrier lacked reflective markings, warning signs, and other mandatory safety measures, making it difficult for motorists to see and ultimately leading to the collision.
The accident allegedly left Waqas with the permanent loss of one eye and multiple facial fractures.
The petition argues that authorities failed to implement essential public safety measures during the construction of the BRT Red Line, and that negligence in installing and marking road barriers directly resulted in the life-altering injuries.
The complainant has asked the court to direct the Sindh government, BRT Red Line administration, and the contractor to jointly pay Rs. 178.07 million in compensation for his medical treatment, rehabilitation, permanent disability, and other losses.
