Pakistan’s rising star, Saim Ayub, will not require surgery for the ankle injury he sustained during the second Test against South Africa in Cape Town, but his road to recovery promises to be a lengthy one.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) provided the latest information on the batter’s injury, confirming on Thursday that the 22-year-old opener will undergo rehabilitation in London. Once his ankle brace is removed, and he receives clearance to bear weight, Ayub will return to Pakistan to complete the final phase of his recovery.
Speaking about the situation, a PCB spokesperson said: “Saim will begin his rehab process in London this month and will return to Pakistan after specialists allow him to resume weight-bearing activities.”
Saim Ayub twisted his ankle which resulted in a fracture while fielding during the second and final Test at Newlands, a moment that has sidelined him from cricket for at least six weeks. This setback means Ayub will miss the ongoing two-Test home series against the West Indies in Multan, as well as next month’s tri-nation ODI series featuring South Africa and New Zealand. According to Shahid Afridi, Saim will also miss the 2025 Champions Trophy but PCB is yet to openly admit to that scenario for now.
Saim Ayub’s meteoric rise has made him one of Pakistan cricket’s most promising talents. Known for his aggressive and fearless batting style, Ayub has already amassed 515 runs in just nine ODIs at an impressive average of 64.37. His recent performances were nothing short of spectacular. The opener smashed two scintillating centuries during Pakistan’s historic 3-0 ODI whitewash against South Africa last month, further cementing his place as a key player for the national side.
