The federal government has decided to approve a substantial salary increase for members of the National Assembly (MNAs) and Senators.
According to ARY News, citing sources, the proposed salary hike could raise the pay of MNAs by 200%, up from the current monthly salary of approximately Rs. 168,000. This proposal will be presented for approval in both the National Assembly and Senate.
After consultations with all coalition and opposition parties, there is now broad agreement on the change.
In addition to the increases for MNAs and Senators, the salaries of ministers and advisors are also set to rise. The Speaker of the National Assembly and the Chairman of the Senate are expected to receive significant raises, potentially boosting their salaries to Rs. 1.5 million per month.
This move follows a joint request from both government and opposition members of the National Assembly, citing the challenges posed by rising inflation. Lawmakers have argued that their current salaries are insufficient to cover their expenses, as they have not kept pace with the increasing cost of living.
The matter is expected to be discussed with the Speaker, Prime Minister, and Finance Minister, with lawmakers pushing for pay parity with their counterparts in Punjab and Balochistan.
