Karachi Bans Littering in Open Spaces

The Karachi Commissioner has issued a notification imposing a two-month prohibition on littering, burning waste in open spaces, and dumping debris and waste into drains, effective January 23.

This action follows complaints from the Sindh Solid Waste Board about the escalating accumulation of waste in open areas and drains, contributing to environmental pollution and the potential for drain blockages.

Under the notification, Sub-Divisional Officers (SDOs) are authorized to report ban violations and enforce measures under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC). Section 144 empowers authorities to issue directives preventing actions that could lead to public unrest or endanger human life, health, or safety. The ban aims to tackle mounting environmental issues and reduce the risk of flooding caused by clogged drains.
