Chinese AI App Dethrones ChatGPT on App Store Within 1 Week

Chinese startup DeepSeek’s latest AI model has captured widespread attention, with its app overtaking ChatGPT to claim the number one spot on Apple’s App Store in the United States.

The newly launched DeepSeek R1, which costs up to 95% less than OpenAI’s competing models, has demonstrated remarkable capabilities in complex reasoning tasks. The model was developed for just $5.6 million – a fraction of what major tech companies typically spend on AI development.

Early user reports suggest DeepSeek R1 delivers on its promises. Software developers have praised its ability to generate efficient code, while others report success with tasks ranging from web development to chess strategy. The model particularly excels at mathematical problem-solving and coding challenges, according to benchmark tests.

Not only that, but DeepSeek is also capable of running locally on modest hardware while still completing complex tasks. Throughout the weekend, users took to social media to demonstrate DeepSeek’s capabilities, showcasing its ability to run efficiently on standard consumer hardware while tackling sophisticated computational tasks.

“This is about democratizing innovation,” said Liang Wenfeng, DeepSeek’s founder and former hedge fund manager, in a recent interview. The company’s approach of offering free access to individual users while charging minimal fees for developers – around $0.14 per million tokens compared to OpenAI’s $7.5 – appears to be resonating with users.

DeepSeek’s success is particularly noteworthy given China’s restricted access to advanced U.S. semiconductor technology. The company managed to stockpile 10,000 Nvidia H100 chips before export controls took effect, enabling continued development despite geopolitical challenges.
