IT Ministry Halts Work on New Digital Pakistan Policy

The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication has stopped work on the new Digital Pakistan Policy.

IT Ministry officials believe the Digital Nation Pakistan Bill is a sufficient framework for addressing the country’s digital transformation needs.

Officials said focused policies in areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain, and other emerging technologies are being prioritized instead.

The IT Ministry had initiated efforts to draft an updated Digital Pakistan Policy to address the growing needs of the country’s digital economy. However, the ministry has decided that the Digital Nation Pakistan Bill already provides the necessary roadmap for a comprehensive digital strategy; so writing up a separate policy is redundant.

The Digital Pakistan Policy was first introduced in 2018 to provide a structured approach to the country’s digital transformation. The proposed update aimed to expand the policy to include advancements in technology and new priorities. Despite halting this initiative, the ministry plans to channel its resources into developing sector-specific policies to ensure a more targeted approach to emerging technologies.

Among the focused areas being addressed are Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain, Cybersecurity, and other cutting-edge technologies. The ministry believes that individualized policies in these sectors will yield better results compared to a broad policy framework.
