Saudi Arabia has implemented mandatory meningitis and polio vaccination requirements for Umrah pilgrims, causing significant challenges in Pakistan. There has been a nationwide shortage of meningitis vaccines, with both (S) and (P) brands out of stock for weeks. This has led to vaccines being sold on the black market at exorbitant prices, exceeding Rs10,000. Government authorities have yet to address the shortage, which is exacerbating the situation.
Reports of counterfeit vaccines further exacerbate the situation, raising concerns about vaccine effectiveness and safety. The Ministry of National Health Services confirms the widespread unavailability of meningitis vaccines nationwide. Efforts to resolve the crisis include plans to import thousands of vials soon.
Meanwhile, obtaining polio vaccination certificates has become cumbersome. Delays occur due to the limited number of authorized personnel able to update certification in the NADRA system. This backlog, coupled with additional fees imposed by NADRA, has burdened pilgrims.
Health officials and experts are urging immediate government action to ensure the availability of authentic vaccines and streamline certification processes. They propose reforms to establish a more efficient vaccination system, enhance regulation, and alleviate financial burdens on pilgrims. The situation may worsen without swift intervention, impacting the Umrah pilgrimage season.
