Traffic Accidents in Punjab Increased 29% in January

Traffic accidents in Punjab saw a sharp rise of 29% in January 2025, despite claims by the City Traffic Police Lahore (CTPL) about improved traffic management.

This increase comes even after the Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) position was upgraded from SSP to DIG rank.

According to the Punjab Emergency Services Department (Rescue 1122), the province experienced a 16.08% rise in overall emergencies in January, raising concerns about public safety.

The total number of emergencies reached 196,963, compared to 169,625 in January 2024. Road traffic crashes were the biggest concern, with 38,791 incidents reported, marking a 29% jump from the previous year’s 30,063.

Other types of emergencies also increased, such as fire incidents, which surged by 37.3%, and medical emergencies, which rose by 12.3%. Crime-related emergencies and electric shocks also saw higher numbers.

This surge in accidents contradicts statements made by DIG Athar Waheed, who took charge as CTO, promising stricter traffic law enforcement. In Lahore, motorcyclists were involved in 72.3% of the crashes, prompting officials to call for better safety measures and tougher action against reckless driving.
