Job Sites Blame Employers for Ignoring Applicants

Job seekers often experience frustration when their applications go unanswered. Hiring platform data shows that employers ignored more than 14 million applications in a single quarter last year.

In response, major job search sites like LinkedIn, Indeed, and Greenhouse are introducing tools to hold employers accountable for poor communication during the hiring process. Greenhouse reports that nearly half of applicants say they have been ghosted after an interview, highlighting the growing issue.

AI’s Role

The rise of AI-powered job application tools has enabled candidates to generate tailored resumes at scale, flooding companies with applications. While this increases career seekers’ chances of finding opportunities, it also overwhelms employers, making it difficult to respond to every applicant.

To combat this, LinkedIn is refining its “job match” feature, which assesses a candidate’s qualifications for a role. The platform aims to reduce the flood of applications and improve response rates by encouraging applicants to focus on roles that match their skills.

New Accountability Tools

Indeed has taken steps to address the lack of employer responsiveness, a major complaint from job seekers. Since 2018, the platform has issued “responsive employer” badges to companies that reply to at least half of all messages. In 2023, Indeed expanded this initiative, adding response time labels to provide more transparency on employer engagement.

Greenhouse is also testing new employer verification badges that assess hiring processes based on communication, preparedness, fairness, and respect. For example, employers must clear out active candidates from closed job listings and send rejection emails to qualify for the “communicative” badge.

Meanwhile, LinkedIn is rolling out “responsiveness insights,” which inform applicants about job postings actively reviewed by employers. The platform is testing this feature on select job listings before expanding it sitewide in the coming months.

The Future

With work seekers demanding better communication and hiring platforms introducing accountability measures, companies may feel pressured to engage more transparently with applicants. Whether companies will consistently adhere to these standards remains to be seen.
