Young left-arm pacer Akif Javed has been called up to Pakistan’s squad for the ongoing tri-nation ODI series against South Africa and New Zealand. The 24-year-old replaces Haris Rauf, who has been sidelined due to a muscular sprain in his lower chest.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed the development on Tuesday, stating that Rauf’s injury is not serious, but he has been rested as a precautionary measure. The right-arm speedster is expected to fully recover in time for the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025, which begins on February 19 in Pakistan.
Haris Rauf sustained the injury during Pakistan’s opening match of the tri-series against New Zealand at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on February 8.
Akif Javed, who has been brought in as Rauf’s replacement, is a promising left-arm pacer with a growing reputation in domestic and franchise cricket. The 24-year-old has played 23 first-class matches, 30 List-A games, and 68 T20s, taking a total of 169 wickets across formats, including one five-wicket haul.
Pakistan will face South Africa in the last league-stage match of the tri-nation series on Wednesday. The match is crucial for Pakistan, as a win would secure their spot in the final against New Zealand.
The tri-nation series serves as a key preparatory event for the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025, which Pakistan is hosting from February 19 to March 9. The tournament will see the world’s top teams compete, and Pakistan will be looking to make a strong impression on home soil.
Haris Rauf’s recovery will be closely monitored, as his pace and experience are vital to Pakistan’s plans for the Champions Trophy.
