India has announced its updated 15-member squad for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, making two key changes to the traveling contingent. Star pacer Jasprit Bumrah and opener Yashasvi Jaiswal have been left out, with fast bowler Harshit Rana and mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy taking their places.
The BCCI was forced to make changes after Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out with a lingering back injury. The injury, sustained during the Sydney Test in January, had already sidelined him from the England white-ball series. His recovery will continue under the supervision of the BCCI medical team. This marks the second ICC event Bumrah will miss due to injury, following his absence from the 2022 T20 World Cup.
To fill the void, India has brought in young pacer Harshit Rana, who recently made his ODI debut against England. His selection over experienced options like Mohammed Siraj has sparked debate, but the selectors have backed him for his ability to perform under pressure.
Meanwhile, the BCCI has doubled down on its “Spin it to win it” strategy, drafting in mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy as a replacement for Yashasvi Jaiswal. The spinner has been in red-hot form, taking 31 wickets at an average of 11.25 since his return to the T20I setup. He also made his ODI debut against England.
Jaiswal, meanwhile, has been named a non-traveling substitute alongside Mohammed Siraj and Shivam Dube.
With Bumrah’s absence, India’s pace attack will now be led by Mohammed Shami, supported by Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana. The spin department looks strong with Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, and Varun Chakravarthy.
