Google is reportedly working on a new security feature for Chrome that could automatically replace compromised passwords with stronger, AI-generated alternatives. This would be an upgrade from the current system, which only alerts users when their saved credentials have appeared in a data breach.
Leopeva64, a well-known software researcher, discovered the “Automated Password Change” feature in an early Chrome build under AI settings. The description suggests that when Chrome detects a breached password, it can immediately generate and store a new one rather than just informing the user.
Windows Report highlights that this update eliminates the need to manually change compromised credentials. Google Password Manager will automatically store the new password, ensuring easy access for future logins. Google also notes that the stored password remains encrypted and private.
While Google’s preliminary description calls this an “AI innovation,” the exact role of AI in the process remains unclear. It is possible that AI could assist in generating stronger passwords, automating the change process across different websites, or enhancing security suggestions for users.
Chrome’s existing password breach detection has helped users secure their accounts by wilting exposed certifications. However, the effort required to change them often leads users to delay or ignore the warning. By introducing automatic password replacement, Google aims to facilitate security practices and encourage better password hygiene.
Since this feature is still in early development, there is no confirmed timeline for its release.
