The Auditor General’s office on Wednesday raised concerns over the Federal Public Service Commission’s (FPSC) failure to appoint private sector members, stating that their absence deprives the commission of valuable expertise.
During a Public Accounts Committee (PAC) meeting, audit officials noted that instead of filling vacancies with professionals from the private sector, two additional government officials were appointed, violating FPSC regulations.
FPSC Secretary Syed Husnain Mehdi defended the commission, stating that appointments are made by the President of Pakistan through the Establishment Division. He added that the FPSC routinely informs the division of vacancies, implying the responsibility lies with them.
MNA Naveed Qamar questioned the ordinance’s clarity, arguing that if the Establishment Division is making appointments against FPSC regulations, its secretary should be held accountable.
Separately, the PAC addressed the encroachment of 176 plots in Karachi’s Gulshan-e-Hadeed Colony, valued at Rs750 million. Audit officials blamed Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) management for failing to protect the land.
PAC Chairman Junaid Akbar ordered the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to investigate the issue and submit a report within two months. He also directed authorities to remove all illegal occupations, emphasizing the need for swift action.
