In a major blow to Pakistan’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign, star opening batter Fakhar Zaman has been reportedly ruled out of the tournament due to an injury sustained during the opening match against New Zealand at the National Bank Stadium in Karachi. He did not travel with the team to Dubai for the upcoming clash with India.
Fakhar, a key figure in Pakistan’s batting lineup, picked up the injury in the very first over of the game while attempting to stop a boundary. Although he briefly left the field for medical attention, he later returned to the field and even batted during Pakistan’s chase. Despite his efforts, Pakistan fell short, losing the match by 60 runs.
The injury occurred when Fakhar dived to stop a ball from crossing the boundary in the opening over of New Zealand’s innings. While his effort successfully prevented a boundary, it came at a cost, as he appeared to twist his knee during the dive. Fakhar was visibly in discomfort and had to leave the field for medical assessment.
After some time off the field, Fakhar returned to resume his fielding duties, raising hopes that the injury was not serious. He later came out to bat during Pakistan’s chase, contributing to the team’s effort in a losing cause.
However, it has now been reported that Fakhar Zaman will not be able to continue in the tournament. Fakhar Zaman’s absence is a significant setback for Pakistan, especially given his importance at the top of the order. Known for his aggressive batting in the powerplay, Fakhar has been a consistent performer for Pakistan in ICC tournaments. His ability to dominate bowlers early in the innings has often set the tone for the team’s batting.
With Fakhar ruled out, Pakistan will need to reshuffle their batting order and find a suitable replacement.
