Baseball franchise, the New York Yankees have officially amended their 50-year-old outdated facial hair policy, allowing players to sport “well-groomed beards.” This decision, announced by managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner
Gone are the days when new acquisitions had to shave their facial hair upon joining the team. This change comes as a breath of fresh air for players like Devin Williams, who, after being traded from the Brewers, expressed his desire to keep his beard intact. Williams, who hadn’t been clean-shaven for about six years, is thrilled about the new policy, stating, “I hope to keep my beard as long as I can.”
Steinbrenner described the previous policy as “outdated” and “somewhat unreasonable,” revealing that he had been contemplating this change for years. “In recent weeks, I have spoken to a large number of former and current Yankees—spanning several eras—to elicit their perspectives on our longstanding facial hair and grooming policy,” he said. The feedback was overwhelmingly in favor of updating the rules.
The decision has been met with enthusiasm from key players, including team captain Aaron Judge, right-hander Gerrit Cole, and designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton. Cole remarked, “It’s appropriate. It makes sense. It still embodies our look and neatness, but allows for some individual freedom and a few less razor burns.”
Steinbrenner emphasized that while beards are now allowed, there will be “parameters” to ensure players maintain a clean and disciplined appearance. He humorously noted that they’re not trying to look like Duck Dynasty, indicating that there are still standards to uphold.
The Yankees’ grooming policy has its roots in a legendary story from 1973 when George M. Steinbrenner, Hal’s father, noticed players with unkempt facial hair during an Opening Day game. His immediate reaction was to demand that manager Ralph Houk enforce a stricter grooming standard. Over the years, this policy became a hallmark of the Yankees’ identity, with players like Sparky Lyle and Thurman Munson famously making the list of those who needed to clean up their looks.
Despite the strict rules, there have been moments of rebellion, with players occasionally flaunting their facial hair. However, the policy remained largely intact until now.
Steinbrenner acknowledged that one of the driving factors behind this change is the fear of missing out on potential free agents due to the old policy. Manager Aaron Boone stated, “We never want to miss out on one player. If we miss out on one player because of that [policy], that’s too many.”
With the new rules in place, fans can expect to see a different look on the field this season. Whether it’s a well-groomed beard or a stylish mustache, the Bronx Bombers are ready to take on the competition with a fresh perspective.
