In a quiet update, tech giant Google has revealed the cost for Veo 2 its latest AI video generation model announced late last year. Users will be charged 50 cents for each second of AI-generated footage, translating to $30 per minute or $1,800 for a full hour of content.
To put these figures into perspective, Google DeepMind researcher Jon Barron offered an intriguing comparison with traditional filmmaking costs. He noted that “Avengers: Endgame,” Marvel’s blockbuster hit, came with a $356 million price tag, averaging approximately $32,000 per second of finished footage, compared to 50 cents of Veo 2.
While the comparison is interesting, it’s worth noting that Veo 2 is currently limited to shorter content, with Google specifically highlighting its ability to produce clips exceeding two minutes. Veo 2’s real-life use is significantly different from traditional film production, as clients typically won’t utilize every second of generated content.
Google’s competitor OpenAI has taken a different approach with its Sora AI video model, making it accessible through a ChatGPT Pro subscription priced at $200 monthly.
Veo 2 brings notable advancements over its predecessor including a better understanding of physics and superior camera control while producing footage with improved visual clarity. These improvements in video quality come from more detailed textures and overall image sharpness, especially in scenes with a lot of motion.
Veo 2 has also refined the ability to manipulate virtual camera positioning, allowing for more precise control over shot composition and enabling fluid transitions between different viewing angles when capturing both inanimate objects and human subjects.
