The 2025 Asia Cup, set to feature a high-stakes series of encounters between the subcontinent’s top cricketing nations, will reportedly be held in a neutral country, with India remaining the official host.
This decision comes amid the complexities surrounding the diplomatic relations between India and Pakistan, which has led the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) to move the tournament from its original host venue. The exact location for the event is yet to be finalized, but UAE and Sri Lanka are strong contenders to play host.
According to Cricbuzz, the decision to hold the 2025 Asia Cup in a neutral country is designed to sidestep the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan, who have not hosted full bilateral series against each other for years due to political and security concerns. This arrangement ensures both teams can participate without the complications of travelling to each other’s respective countries.
The 2025 Asia Cup will feature eight teams, including India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, UAE, Oman, and Hong Kong.
Pakistan and India will inevitably meet in the group stage, given the current tournament structure, with the teams placed in the same group. The proposed structure also ensures that the top two teams from each group advance to the Super Four stage, where another potential India-Pakistan encounter could take place.
Should both teams reach the final, a third meeting between them could occur, making it a possible three encounters during the tournament. In such a scenario, moving games in and out of India makes hosting the tournament on a hybrid model unfeasible for the BCCI.
The 2025 Asia Cup will be the first of four editions planned through 2031. After this T20 edition, the 2027 Asia Cup will return to the ODI format, hosted by Bangladesh, while the 2029 edition will also be a T20 tournament, hosted by Pakistan but likely played in a neutral country. The final edition in the cycle, set for 2031, will once again be in the ODI format and held in Sri Lanka.
Although India remains the official host, the location is yet to be confirmed, making the 2025 Asia Cup one of the most thrilling tournaments in recent memory.
