Umar Akmal Asks Army Chief to Bring Him Back to International Cricket

Umar Akmal once considered the future of the Pakistan cricket team, has made headlines for his off-the-field behavior once again. In a dramatic plea for a return to the cricketing fold, Umar Akmal has appealed directly to the country’s Army Chief, General Asim Munir, to help facilitate his comeback to the national team.

Akmal, whose career has been marred by disciplinary and legal issues, is seeking outside intervention to smooth the way for his reinstatement in cricketing circles, as he appears skeptical of the regulatory powers that be.

Umar Akmal made these comments during a local podcast. In an emotional appeal, Akmal addressed the Army Chief directly, recognizing the influence and authority he holds in Pakistan’s sports framework. “I request the government and the Pakistan Army Chief to look into my matter. I have been cleared by all the courts. I am ready with all the proofs, anything that you will need. I am being blacklisted. I have five years of cricket in me, and I want to play for Pakistan once again, not the leagues,” he stated.

Umar Akmal’s career is an unfortunate example for him personally and for the Pakistan cricket team. After bursting onto the international scene, he quickly fizzled out. Once touted as the future of Pakistan cricket, he became irrelevant in a matter of years as off-field issues continued to plague his talent on the pitch.

The 34-year-old was banned by the PCB in 2020 for failing to report corrupt approaches, a decision that left his career in limbo. His suspension was further complicated by prior instances of indiscipline. Despite his immense talent and destructive batting ability, Akmal’s repeated off-field controversies have kept him out of the national spotlight.

Umar Akmal, for his part, remains optimistic that with the right support, he can rebuild his career and contribute to Pakistan’s success on the international stage once more. He has not played an international fixture since 2019, and his chances for a return are as slim as they can be. The response to his request remains to be seen.
