Sonim, a brand known for its durable, rugged phones, has unveiled its latest device—the Sonim XP Pro Thermal. This model marks the company’s first smartphone with an integrated thermal imaging camera, making it particularly useful for professionals in fields such as home maintenance, inspection, automotive repair, and construction.
The Sonim XP Pro Thermal builds upon the foundation of the XP Pro, maintaining its rugged build and durability. The phone features a 6.58-inch FHD+ display, reinforced with Gorilla Glass Victus 2, ensuring resistance against drops and scratches.
Its rugged construction follows Sonim’s Rugged Performance Standards, and third-party testing for MIL-STD-810H, IP68, and IPX9K certifications is currently underway. These ratings indicate protection against water, dust, shocks, and extreme temperatures, making it ideal for demanding work environments.
Under the hood, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chipset powers the XP Pro Thermal, pairing it with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, which users can expand via a microSD card. The phone runs Android 14 out of the box, ensuring an up-to-date software experience.
The standout feature of this device is the FLIR Lepton 3.5 thermal imaging camera, integrated for professional use. The camera works with the Sonim IRIS app, which builds on MyFLIR Pro and is fully compatible with FLIR Thermal Studio. Additionally, developers can utilize the Sonim IRIS SDK to create custom applications leveraging the thermal camera’s capabilities.
With this thermal imaging technology, professionals can detect electrical issues, assess home insulation, identify leaks, and monitor equipment performance. The XP Pro Thermal is expected to benefit electricians, HVAC specialists, plumbers, safety inspectors, construction workers, and first responders. However, its real capabilities and efficiency will only become clear once the device launches and reaches consumers.
The device retains a 5,000mAh battery, promising sufficient usage for professionals working in the field. While pre-orders are expected to open soon, the XP Pro Thermal will first launch in Europe and South Africa in Q2 2025 (April-June), with availability expanding to other regions later. However, the company has not yet disclosed pricing details.
