Why is Karachi Getting Fewer PSL 10 Matches Than Other Cities?

The schedule for the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 10 has been confirmed, but it includes a startling revelation regarding matches at the National Stadium in Karachi. Once a central hub for the tournament, Karachi has been allocated fewer matches in the upcoming season, a decision likely to irk many fans from the City of Lights.

The PCB’s decision to reduce the number of PSL 10 matches in Karachi reportedly stems from declining spectator interest in recent years, particularly after the 2023 edition, where the city experienced low ticket sales. This led to financial setbacks for both the PCB and the PSL franchises leading to changes for season 10.

The PCB has taken note of the dip in attendance at Karachi’s National Bank Stadium, which ultimately impacted overall revenue generation for the tournament. Sources suggest that the low turnout prompted a reassessment of match allocations for the 10th edition of the PSL, with the board opting to distribute more fixtures to venues with stronger audience engagement.

Notably, Rawalpindi has been favored in PSL 10’s match distribution due to its strong ticket sales and consistent spectator turnout in previous seasons. Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium will host 11 matches, including the crucial first Qualifier on May 13.

The shift in match allocation also reportedly stems from the reluctance of several PSL franchises to play more games in Karachi. With fewer teams willing to make Karachi their home ground, the Quetta Gladiators have been moved from their designated home venue in Karachi to Rawalpindi and Lahore.

As a result of these changes, Rawalpindi will feature more prominently, while Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium will also host a significant portion of the tournament. Lahore will host 13 matches, including the Eliminators and the grand final, further solidifying its position as a marquee venue.
