South Africa and Australia to Travel to Dubai Due to Champions Trophy Scheduling Howler

The scheduling of the Champions Trophy 2025 semi-finals has left the participating teams in limbo, which has led to them adopting creative solutions ahead of the fixture dates.

The semi-finals will be played in two different countries after India’s qualification, which has created a logistical challenge for the teams qualifying from Group B, most likely Australia and South Africa. As a result, both teams will travel to Dubai today, despite one of them having to return to Pakistan the following day.

An ICC official explained that the decision was made to give the team playing in Dubai on March 4 as much time as possible to prepare. However, this arrangement also means that one team will end up travelling unnecessarily, spending time at a venue where they will not play.

Australia has already begun their journey to Dubai, having secured their spot in the semi-finals after their match against Afghanistan was abandoned in Lahore. Meanwhile, South Africa—expected to qualify—will leave Karachi for Dubai immediately after their final group-stage game against England. If, by any miracle, Afghanistan qualifies instead of South Africa, they will also fly to Dubai without delay.

The unnecessary travel is not the only issue plaguing the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy. Not a single team knows their opponent, as the final standings in Group A will only be determined after India faces New Zealand on Sunday. Regardless of their position in the group, India’s semi-final will take place in Dubai, as part of the hybrid hosting model, which ensures all Indian matches are played outside Pakistan.

This means that Australia and South Africa (or Afghanistan) will only learn where their semi-final will be played after India’s final group game. The second semi-final will be played in Lahore on March 5. The uncertainty also extends to the final. If India wins their semi-final, the final will be hosted in Dubai. However, if India loses, the final will take place at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

As the tournament nears its conclusion, the unusual scheduling is just one of the issues to have taken the sheen off this Champions Trophy. While the teams remain in limbo, fans across the globe will be hoping that the unnecessary travel does not affect the play on the field.
