Infinix has unveiled a prototype phone at the Mobile World Congress 2025 (MWC) with an integrated solar panel on the back, along with a solar charging phone case. While both are still a concept, the functional demo suggests a promising step toward solar-powered mobile devices.
Infinix calls this SolarEnergy-Reserving technology, which utilizes perovskite solar cells. These cells are thinner and more affordable to produce than traditional silicon-based solar panels. To regulate power and minimize overheating, Infinix has incorporated Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT), which adjusts voltage to optimize energy efficiency. Currently, the technology supports charging at up to 2W, acting as a trickle charge to extend a phone’s standby power when not in use.
While the built-in solar panel phone is intriguing, the solar charging case may be the more practical innovation. It attaches to a prototype phone using small side contacts to transfer power. Unlike a phone with a fixed solar panel, the case lets users swap it out for a regular case when solar charging isn’t needed, such as when going out at night. It could also be a useful backup during power outages, providing an emergency charge when no outlets are available.
Color-Changing E-Ink Back Panel
The company is also showcasing its second-generation color-changing E-Ink panel on a phone at MWC. Unlike its predecessor, which could only change colors when plugged in, the new version runs on the phone’s internal battery, allowing for customizable patterns and palettes.
Users can choose a photo, set it to match the weather, or let AI generate dynamic themes. While traditional displays remain more prominent, the effect adds a unique personalization element to the phone’s design.
