As Ramazan approaches, the prices of broiler chicken—like other essential food items—have seen a sharp rise across Karachi.
In the Karachi division, the price of broiler chicken has jumped by Rs120 to Rs150 per kilogram, with rates soaring to Rs720 to Rs800 per kg on Tuesday. Before Ramazan, chicken meat was selling between Rs600 and Rs650 per kg.
An official from the Sindh Poultry & Retailer Association has alleged that distributors have artificially created a supply shortage, leading to the price hike. He claimed that distributors have deliberately withheld supply, causing demand to surge.
He further stated that while the Karachi commissioner has set the official price at Rs650 per kg, retailers are unable to sell at this rate. He also highlighted that during district administration raids, fines of up to Rs30,000 are being imposed, making it difficult for them to operate under these conditions.
The association warned that if distributors do not resume supply soon, retailers might go on strike starting Thursday, potentially causing further disruptions in the market.
