David Lloyd Slams ICC’s Champions Trophy Scheduling

The ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has faced heavy criticism over its tournament logistics, particularly its convoluted scheduling that has forced teams into an exhausting and chaotic travel routine. Former England cricketer and renowned commentator David ‘Bumble’ Lloyd has joined the fray as another critic, expressing his disdain for the situation and labelling the entire arrangement as “farcical” and “embarrassing.”

The controversy reached its peak when South Africa’s squad found themselves caught in a disorienting back-and-forth between Dubai and Lahore. With the semifinal locations not confirmed until less than 48 hours before the first match, the Proteas were forced to fly from Dubai to Lahore and back again, creating unnecessary stress for the team. While none of the players blamed the exhausting commute as the reason for their semifinal loss, the situation was far from ideal.

David Lloyd, who has been outspoken on issues surrounding ICC tournament management, minced no words when discussing the situation. In a video posted on social media, the commentator expressed his frustration:

“It’s really embarrassing that this is one of the highest, most important events in world cricket, and the arrangements for playing are farcical,” said Lloyd. “It’s laughable that you have to do that. I mean, words fail me.”

The scheduling issues didn’t stop with South Africa. Both Australia and South Africa were forced to travel to Dubai on Sunday, with the outcome of India’s match against New Zealand determining which team would face India in the first semifinal. This created a scenario where the teams were in a state of limbo, unsure of their next destination until the final group stage results were decided.

The scheduling also saw two critical games played in Dubai within a span of just three days. Lloyd criticized the ICC for its handling of such a major global tournament, calling it “nonsense” that teams were left unsure of where they would play next.

“You have teams who go from here to there; you might play here, you might not, you might have to go back,” Lloyd added, emphasizing the lack of clarity surrounding the tournament structure.

David Lloyd’s frustration also extended to the perceived favoritism shown towards India. With Dubai acting as India’s home base for the entire tournament, the team capitalized on the advantage, defeating Australia in the semifinal before heading to the final.

“The fact that you have two games in three days in Dubai… it’s just not right,” said Lloyd, echoing the sentiments of many fans and analysts who felt the scheduling was skewed in India’s favor.

The Englishman is not the only voice to raise doubts about the ICC’s schedule planning for the Champions Trophy or its favoring of India. However, the issue is likely set to continue, given that Pakistan and India have agreed to this hybrid model for upcoming ICC events as well.
