Pakistan Ranked Second in Global Terrorism Index 2025

Pakistan has been ranked as the second most affected country in the Global Terrorism Index (GTI) 2025, with a 45% rise in terrorism-related deaths over the past year.

According to the report by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), Pakistan recorded 1,081 fatalities, marking the highest increase in a decade.

The number of terror attacks more than doubled, rising from 517 in 2023 to 1,099 in 2024, surpassing 1,000 for the first time since the index was introduced. Most attacks were concentrated in Balochistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, where militant groups continue to operate.

The Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) was identified as the deadliest group, responsible for 52% of Pakistan’s terror-related deaths. The report links the rise in terrorism to the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, which has allowed militant groups greater freedom to plan attacks.

Baloch separatist groups, including the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), have also escalated violence, with attacks increasing from 116 to 504 in a year. The BLA was behind Pakistan’s deadliest attack of 2024 in Quetta.

The Pakistani government has launched counterterrorism operations to curb the threat, but challenges persist as militancy continues to rise.
