The federal government has introduced key amendments to the Civil Servants Promotion Rules, 1973, following approval from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The Establishment Division has issued a Statutory Regulatory Order (SRO) to implement the changes.
Under the revised rules, civil servants seeking promotion to Grade 22 will have only two chances for consideration. If they fail to secure a promotion on both occasions, they will no longer be eligible and will retire in their current grade.
A notification regarding the amendments has been published in the Gazette of Pakistan. Meanwhile, a high-powered selection board has approved the promotion of 36 senior civil servants from BS-21 to BS-22.
The officers belong to the Pakistan Administrative Service (PAS), Police Service of Pakistan (PSP), and Foreign Service of Pakistan (FSP). The board’s 29th meeting, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, recommended promotions for 19 PAS officers, eight PSP officers, and nine FSP officers.
Unlike previous meetings, this session was held at the Establishment Division’s Committee Room instead of the Prime Minister’s Secretariat.
Other key attendees included Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Minister for Establishment Ahad Khan Cheema, and secretaries of the Cabinet and Establishment divisions.
