Champions Trophy Final to Feature a Used Pitch

The pitch for the highly anticipated Champions Trophy final has been finalized, and as anticipated, it is expected to be another slow, sluggish surface, typical of many Dubai pitches. The final will be played on the strip used for the Group A clash between India and Pakistan on February 23, which should again favor the spinners. India, with their formidable spin attack, will view this as an advantage heading into their final against New Zealand on Sunday.

The Dubai International Cricket Stadium (DICS) has 10 pitches, all prepared under Australian curator Matthew Sandery’s supervision. These pitches are predominantly slow, offering significant turn, which makes batting challenging. The average first-innings score in the four games at DICS has been 246, with Australia’s 264 against India in the semifinal as the highest. India chased that total in 49 overs, losing six wickets. In contrast, Pakistan’s 10 games have seen an average first-innings score of 295.

Historically, Dubai pitches have favored bowlers more than batters, and the Champions Trophy final is expected to follow the same trend.

In the earlier match on this surface, Pakistan opted to bat first but struggled against India’s spinners. Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, and Ravindra Jadeja shared five wickets between them, stifling Pakistan’s progress. Varun Chakravarthy, who did not feature in that game, will likely relish the conditions for the final. The opening overs also offered some movement, which could come into play for the pace attacks of both teams.

India’s spin attack has been in fine form throughout the tournament, with their collective dominance with the ball playing a key role in their success. Heading into the final, they are the only team to have dismissed all four of their opponents.

As the teams prepare for an exciting decider, the slow, spin-friendly conditions at DICS seem to favor India’s strengths, with their spinners and adaptable batting line-up set to take center stage.
