Pakistan continues to face serious challenges in gender equality, ranking 145th out of 146 countries in the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Global Gender Gap Report 2024. The only country ranked lower is Sudan.
Despite making up nearly half of the population, women in Pakistan remain underrepresented in the workforce, with only 23% engaged in economic activities. Over 40 million women are outside the labor force, and those who work face significant wage disparities.
According to the World Bank, women earn 18% less than men, meaning that for every Rs. 1,000 a man earns, a woman receives only Rs. 818 for the same job.
The situation is particularly concerning in the agricultural sector, where 68% of employed women work. However, 76% of them are unpaid, compared to 24% of men.
In managerial roles, gender imbalance is stark, with only 0.14% of women holding leadership positions compared to 2.33% of men.
Educational inequality further worsens the gender gap, with Pakistan showing low literacy rates and enrollment disparities. The WEF report calls for urgent action to improve economic participation and leadership opportunities for women, emphasizing that gender equality is crucial for national progress.
