Former Chief Selector Set to Participate in the National T20 Cup

Pakistan Cricket Board’s promise of unearthing new talent seems to have taken an early hit, with reports suggesting that former Chief Selector Wahab Riaz will return to domestic cricket for the upcoming National T20 Cup.

In a surprising turn of events, former Pakistan international cricketer Wahab Riaz is set to don the Lahore Whites jersey for the tournament in March. This development comes after his recent performance in a trial match, where he showcased both his bowling and batting prowess. During the Lahore Region Cricket Association trial match at Aligarh Ground, Wahab represented Lahore Greens and claimed one wicket for 25 runs in his three-over spell, dismissing the promising young batsman Rana Arsalan. With the bat, Wahab contributed a quickfire 31 runs, including three towering sixes.

The trial itself was part of the selection process for the National T20 Cup, and Wahab Riaz seems to have done enough to earn a place in the squad. How much the 39-year-old’s participation will benefit Pakistan cricket remains to be seen.

Former players occupying spots on domestic rosters has long been a point of contention in Pakistan cricket, often bottlenecking the development of younger talent. Wahab Riaz’s inclusion in Lahore Whites’ squad is yet another example of this trend.

Wahab last played for Pakistan in 2020, and his last appearance in the PSL was in 2023. The left-armer appeared to transition into a management role after serving as a member of PCB’s selection committee for a brief period. He was also recently one of the graduates of PCB’s Level-2 Coaching Course. How his return to domestic cricket pans out will be closely watched.

As Wahab Riaz prepares to don domestic colours once again, the PCB’s handling of domestic cricket is likely to come under scrutiny. While the full list of 18 teams has yet to be revealed, it wouldn’t be a surprise if more familiar names from the past make an appearance on the rosters.

Karachi Whites are the defending champions of the tournament, which is set to take place this month.
