HP Firmware Update is Breaking Printers, Even with Official Toners

HP is again facing backlash after users reported that a recent firmware update disabled some of the company’s LaserJet series printers, even when using official HP toner. The issue originates from firmware version 20250209, which HP released on March 4 to deliver security updates, bug fixes, and performance improvements.

However, users began reporting that their printers suddenly stopped working shortly after the update. Affected devices display Error Code 11 and a flashing toner light, despite being loaded with HP-brand toner. Customers have taken to HP’s support forums, with several saying they tried reinstalling the toner and cleaning contacts with no success.

One frustrated user noted, “It’s my small business printer and just stopped working out of nowhere, and I even replaced the toner, which was a $60 expense.”

HP, which has a history of disabling third-party ink via firmware updates, now faces criticism for causing issues even with its products. The company has acknowledged the problem, stating:

We are aware of a firmware issue affecting a limited number of HP LaserJet 200 Series devices and our team is actively working on a solution. For assistance, affected customers can contact our support team at: https://support.hp.com.

So far, HP has not released a timeline for a fix or confirmed how widespread the problem is. While the update’s changelog mentioned standard bug fixes and regulatory updates, HP gave no warning about changes to how the printer recognizes toner, leaving users confused and stuck with non-functioning devices.
