Microsoft has announced it will officially end support for its Remote Desktop app for Windows on May 27, 2025. After this date, users will no longer be able to connect to services like Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, or Microsoft Dev Box using the legacy app. Instead, Microsoft is urging users to transition to the newer Windows App, which offers a more modern and capable experience.
This shift isn’t unexpected. Microsoft introduced the Windows App in September 2024 as a replacement for the older Remote Desktop app. The newer app offers significant improvements, including multi-monitor support, dynamic display resolution, and streamlined access to cloud-based PCs and virtual desktops.
Moreover, the updated app is designed to deliver better performance and usability, aligning more closely with Microsoft’s current cloud-first approach.
Microsoft has clarified that connections made to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Dev Box via the legacy Remote Desktop app from the Microsoft Store will be completely blocked after the May 27 deadline. While the app may still work for other local or non-cloud-based remote connections, its utility will be significantly reduced.
In the meantime, Microsoft recommends all users and organizations migrate to the Windows App to avoid disruptions. The new app is available through the Microsoft Store and is compatible with modern versions of Windows.
Additionally, IT departments should notify employees and update internal support documentation to reflect this change. By transitioning early, users can take advantage of the improved performance and features the Windows App has to offer — ensuring a smooth experience well beyond the support cutoff.
