US Likely to Place Serious Visa Restrictions on Pakistanis

According to a document obtained by The New York Times, the Trump administration has drafted a proposal to limit U.S. entry for citizens of several countries, with Pakistan prominently featured on the “orange” list.

This tier subjects Pakistan to sharply restricted visas, allowing affluent business travelers to enter but barring those on immigrant or tourist visas. Additionally, Pakistani citizens will face mandatory in-person interviews to obtain a visa.

The proposal, part of a broader travel ban framework, categorizes countries into red, orange, and yellow tiers. The “red” list, facing a complete ban, includes:

  • Afghanistan
  • Bhutan
  • Cuba
  • Iran
  • Libya
  • North Korea
  • Somalia
  • Sudan
  • Syria
  • Venezuela
  • Yemen

The “orange” list, with sharply restricted visas, features:

  • Belarus
  • Eritrea
  • Haiti
  • Laos
  • Myanmar
  • Pakistan
  • Russia
  • Sierra Leone
  • South Sudan
  • Turkmenistan

The “yellow” list, given 60 days to address U.S. concerns, includes:

  • Angola
  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • Benin
  • Burkina Faso
  • Cambodia
  • Cameroon
  • Cape Verde
  • Chad
  • Republic of Congo
  • Equatorial Guinea
  • Gambia
  • Liberia
  • Malawi
  • Mali
  • Mauritania
  • St. Kitts and Nevis
  • St. Lucia
  • São Tomé and Príncipe

Stemming from a January 20 executive order by President Trump, the plan directs the State Department to identify countries for enhanced vetting.
