Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has reduced its workforce to 7,000 employees as part of a downsizing effort, according to Federal Parliamentary Secretary for Defense Zaib Jafar. She made the statement during the Question Hour in the National Assembly on Wednesday.
Jafar explained that the restructuring process aimed to improve efficiency, lowering the number of employees from 18,000 to 7,000. She also stated that PIA’s fleet now consists of 213 aircraft.
During the session, MP Tahira Aurangzeb questioned why PIA still maintains a high staff-to-aircraft ratio. Meanwhile, Dr. Shazia Sobia Aslam Soomro raised concerns over the high fares on newly introduced domestic routes, particularly between Sukkur and Karachi.
She pointed out that ticket prices for this route were nearly as high as flights to Dubai.
In response, Chairman Abdul Qadir Patel instructed the parliamentary secretary to prepare a detailed report addressing these concerns and present it to the House.
