Harbhajan Singh Faces Backlash for Alleged Racist Remark on Jofra Archer During IPL

India’s often controversial off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has found himself at the center of attention once again after an alleged racist remark about England pacer Jofra Archer during an IPL 2025 match. The comment, made while Harbhajan was on Hindi commentary duty during Rajasthan Royals’ fixture against Sunrisers Hyderabad, has sparked outrage across social media, with many calling for his removal from the tournament’s broadcast team.

The incident occurred during Royals’ opening match against Sunrisers, where Archer endured a tough outing, conceding 76 runs in his four-over spell without taking a wicket—the most expensive figures in IPL history. While analyzing the England fast bowler’s performance, Harbhajan reportedly likened Archer’s economy rate to the fast-running meters of “black taxis” in London. His choice of words has since been widely condemned, with critics accusing him of racial insensitivity.

Following the remark, social media was flooded with criticism, and many demanded action from the BCCI. The backlash has intensified calls for stricter scrutiny of commentary standards in the IPL.

This is not the first time Harbhajan Singh has found himself at the center of a racism row. Back in 2008, he was handed a three-match ban for making racist remarks towards Australia’s Andrew Symonds, although his punishment was later reduced to a 50% match fee deduction.

Meanwhile, the game itself saw Sunrisers Hyderabad dominate Rajasthan Royals with a commanding 44-run victory. Batting first, Hyderabad piled up a massive 286-run total, leaving Rajasthan with a daunting chase. Despite a spirited effort, the Royals fell short, finishing at 242.

As the debate around Harbhajan Singh’s comments continues to escalate, all eyes are now on the BCCI and IPL broadcasters to see if any action will be taken in response to the controversy.
