Discord Gets a Visual Overhaul and New Themes for Free

Discord has rolled out a major update for its desktop app, introducing a full dark mode called Onyx that is especially well-suited for OLED monitors that benefit from deep blacks. This update is part of a broader UI refresh that brings the desktop experience closer to the mobile version, while also improving overall functionality.

New Dark Mode and Theme Options

Notably, Discord has replaced its traditional dark theme with a new Onyx dark mode, which offers a deeper black, similar to the mobile version. In addition to this, the app now features another Dark theme. This means that free users now have four theme options to choose from.

Furthermore, the update includes a resizable channel list and improves spacing throughout the interface, all of which enhance legibility and reduce visual clutter.

Refined Call Interface

Discord has refined its call interface as well. A new bar has been added, making it easier to see whether your microphone is enabled and if your camera is on or off. These adjustments contribute to a more intuitive user experience, allowing users to manage their calls with greater ease and efficiency.

Improved Game Overlay

Discord has also revamped its game overlay, which previously affected frame rates by “hooking” directly into game windows. Now, the overlay operates with a much snappier performance, thanks to the integration of individual widgets.

Similar to features found in the Xbox Game Bar and Steam’s overlay, users can reposition these widgets according to their preferences. Additionally, the updated overlay now supports a broader range of games and is less likely to trigger anti-cheat systems.

Other Enhancements

Discord has also adjusted colors and illustrations throughout its desktop app. According to Peter Sellis, senior vice president of product at Discord, these updates aim to reduce visual noise and maintain consistency across both desktop and mobile platforms.
