Punjab Issues Lumpy Skin Disease Alert Ahead of Eid-ul-Azha

The Punjab Livestock and Dairy Development Department has issued an alert concerning the spread of lumpy skin disease (LSD), a viral infection affecting cattle. The alert comes few weeks ahead of Eid-ul-Azha festivities.

As part of preventive efforts, seven checkposts have been established across Rawalpindi district to inspect animals and raise awareness among the public.

Director of the Livestock Department’s Rawalpindi chapter, Dr. Naveed Sahar Zaidi, confirmed that the alert was issued following instructions from Punjab Livestock Secretary Saqib Ali Ateel.

Although no confirmed cases of the disease have been reported in Punjab so far, the department has stepped up precautions to avoid any potential outbreak.

“Preventive measures have been tightened across the province. Checkposts have been placed at all district entry and exit points to monitor animal movement,” Dr. Zaidi said. “Our teams have been on duty since a day before Eid, inspecting all incoming cattle.”

Saqib Ali Ateel added that instructions have been given to stop any visibly infected animal from entering Rawalpindi division. He urged farmers and livestock owners to remain vigilant and report any symptoms or suspicious animals to the nearest veterinary centre without delay.

Lumpy skin disease is known to cause fever, nodules on the skin, and other serious health issues in cattle. Early detection and isolation are crucial to stopping its spread.
