An Indian-origin man has been formally charged in the United States for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman during a domestic flight earlier this year.
Federal authorities have identified the accused as Bhaveshkumar Dahyabhai Shukla, 36, who was taken into custody in New Jersey and is set to be transferred to Montana for legal proceedings. He is due to appear in a federal court on April 17.
The incident reportedly occurred on January 26 aboard a flight travelling from Belgrade, Montana, to Dallas, Texas. According to official court filings, Shukla is accused of inappropriately touching a woman seated next to him on two separate occasions during the journey.
The woman, who was traveling with her daughter, reportedly texted her husband mid-flight to inform him of the alleged assault. He then contacted law enforcement, prompting authorities to intercept Shukla upon arrival.
An affidavit submitted by FBI Special Agent Chad McNiven states that the woman told investigators Shukla initially groped her thighs, buttocks, and lower back. She claims that he ceased only after she protested. After a brief visit to the restroom, she alleges the inappropriate contact resumed, with Shukla using his coat to obscure his actions.
A fellow passenger is said to have corroborated the woman’s version of events.
When questioned by airport police, Shukla allegedly claimed he did not speak English. However, officials noted that he had communicated in English with the victim and her daughter during the flight. A Gujarati interpreter was later provided during his court appearance in New Jersey.
Shukla faces a federal charge of “abusive sexual contact,” a serious offence under U.S. law. The case will be heard in Montana, where the investigation is being led by federal prosecutors in coordination with the FBI.
