Heatwave: Early Summer Vacations Proposed in Punjab’s Schools and Colleges

As temperatures continue to climb across Punjab, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a heatwave advisory to the School Education and Higher Education Departments, calling for urgent steps to safeguard students and staff.

The PDMA has also circulated the advisory to all commissioners and deputy commissioners, highlighting the importance of early preparation.

The letter recommends adjusting school and college hours to avoid the hottest parts of the day and suggests that summer vacations may need to be announced earlier if the heat intensifies further.

Educational institutions have been directed to ensure the continuous availability of clean, cool drinking water on campus and to promote light, breathable clothing among students.

Health risks associated with high temperatures—particularly for children in crowded, poorly ventilated classrooms—were also emphasised in the advisory.

The warning comes as the Met Office forecasts higher-than-usual temperatures in the weeks ahead, prompting the PDMA to urge school authorities to act swiftly and responsibly to minimise health risks during the extreme weather spell.
