The Punjab government has announced a public holiday across Lahore on April 12, 2025, in observance of the annual Mela Chiraghan, which marks the Urs of the 16th-century Sufi poet and saint, Hazrat Shah Hussain.
A formal notification from the Services and General Administration Department (Welfare Wing) confirmed the holiday, stating that it will apply to all government offices and institutions falling within the Lahore district.
According to the notification, “This public holiday is being observed in connection with the annual Urs of Hazrat Shah Hussain (Mela Chiraghan) and will be effective across all sub-offices located within the Lahore district.”
However, the directive makes it clear that the Punjab Civil Secretariat, along with its affiliated departments and regional offices, will remain open and are not covered by this holiday.
Mela Chiraghan, also known as the Festival of Lights, is a major cultural and spiritual gathering in Lahore. The event is held every year at the shrine of Hazrat Shah Hussain and draws large crowds of devotees, artists, and admirers of Sufi traditions.
The celebration includes musical performances, poetry, and traditional rituals that honour the life and teachings of the revered Sufi figure.
