Punjab Govt to Reportedly Organize Basant Festival

The Punjab government has started preparations for a safe and regulated Basant festival in Lahore, scheduled for February 2026, 24News reported, citing sources.

Following directives from Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, a high-level committee has been established to plan the event.

The committee consists of officials from the Walled City Authority, the Lahore Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, CCPO Lahore, and representatives from various departments, including the Kite Flying Association.

According to the report, sources revealed that authorities are considering hosting the festival in the Walled City and are planning to celebrate it over two designated days. To ensure safety, a proposal is under consideration to ban motorcycles during the event.

Only vendors registered with the district administration will be permitted to sell and buy kites, while manufacturers of kite string (dor) will also need prior registration with authorities.

The district administration will introduce specific guidelines for the materials used in kite string production. The use of glass-coated or metallic string will be strictly prohibited. All kite strings will undergo inspection to ensure they meet the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) set by the authorities.
