The Punjab government has decided to appoint 23,000 school teacher interns across 2,000 upgraded schools throughout the province, aiming to address the teacher shortage in the education sector.
The upgraded institutions were selected based on recommendations from elected representatives and community figures over the past five years.
In addition to this, the government has cleared the Schedule of New Expenditures (SNE) for 781 schools where these intern teachers will be placed.
Under the previous administration, 1,229 primary schools were upgraded to a higher level, with 51 located in Lahore. The hiring process for School Teacher Interns (STIs) is expected to conclude by August this year.
The initiative is awaiting budget approval from the provincial cabinet committee. Currently, 1,200 STIs are already working in various schools across Punjab, and the new recruitment drive is expected to expand teaching support where permanent staff positions remain vacant.
