Govt Forms Technical Committee to Probe Mysterious Gas Pocket in Karachi

The Ministry of Energy (Petroleum Division), Government of Pakistan, has formally constituted a technical committee to investigate and resolve the Korangi Creek fire incident in Karachi. The move comes in response to a letter from the Commissioner Karachi Division dated April 3, 2025, highlighting the urgency of the matter.

According to an official notification issued by the Directorate General of Petroleum Concessions, the committee comprises four senior officials from the petroleum exploration and production sector:

The committee has been tasked to begin work immediately and will operate under specific terms of reference. These include conducting a thorough technical investigation to determine the cause and extent of the fire, recommending both immediate and long-term mitigation strategies, and coordinating necessary interventions with local authorities to ensure effective containment and risk management.

Pakistan Refinery Limited has been directed to establish a dedicated Camp Office on-site without delay. All E&P and service companies operating in Sindh have been requested to provide logistical and technical support to assist in firefighting and remedial operations.
